"Backology"

The Speed Graphics suited to use with our Aero Ektar can come with two different backs. There is either the Graphic back (springback) or the superseded Graflok back mounted. The difference is the removable GG frame section on the Graflok types. They can be easily recognized as they have two chrome sliders, one on top and one at the bottom, where the Graphic back has its focusing panel permanently attached to the camera by a pair of flat springs.
Do we need a Graflok or International back?
This solely depends on what you want to shoot. If you will shoot 4x5 exclusively, there is no need to wait for one with a Graflok back. Only when you want to shoot rollfilm you will need a Graflok back, anything else can be done with a Graflex Graphic back also. As can be seen below there are only two gadgets where the Graflok back is mandatory.

As a general rule, any back twice the width of a cut-film holder can be used on a Graphic back without problems.
Even the 550 Polaroid packfilm holder will fit! If you plan to shoot with a digital back you will need a Graflok or International back. If in doubt, the Graflok is preferable but the Graphic back can serve you well also.

NOTE:: For our photographs we have used the Graflok back exclusively.

Graphic and Graflok back

  • Comparison : Graphic and Graflok back

Both the Graphic and the Graflok back exposed.
On the far right is the preferable Graflok back. Mentioned before, the Graphic back will accept most of the 4x5 backs without any problem. Both types have the same collapsible viewing hood which were taken off for a clear view and identification. As can be seen easily, the Graflok back has the standard Ektalite fresnel lens mounted.

NOTE :: When acquiring Graflex Sheet, Plate Holders or Grafmatic be aware there are two types for either the Graflex or the Graphic spring-actuated back. The difference between the Graphic and the Graflex type film holders is that the Graflex attachment is grooved along each of its two slide edges, while the Graphic attachments are N O T grooved.

Nothing to scare your socks off ? Well it is discontinued anyway!

Actually the body of the standard Polaroid Land camera fitted to a special casting for attachment to the 4x5 graflok back. It used the standard Polaroid 8-exposure film, producing 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 pictures.(Series 40) It was furnished with a special mask for the optical tubular view finder and a special focusing plate which sets the lens just the right distance behind the normal infinity position, to compensate for the shift of the film plane.

Was only useable with the graflok back, a very heavy and inconvenient gadget in my view. However,it was a major breakthrough in the late 40 ties/early 50 ties

    Viewing hood

  •  Viewing Mask
  • Graflex Viewing Mask

Most Speed Graphics come standard with a collapsible all metal viewing hood. The viewing hood can and must be taken off to study the GG with a loupe.
The hood serves also as a GG protector.

  •  GroundGlass Protector
  • Ground Glass Protector

This is a GroundGlass protector made by Cambo/Calumet for all 4x5 camera's. It is inserted the same way as a cut-film holder. This might be the solution if you don't have or don't want the standard Graflex viewing hood.
If you use the GG very often this hood can be a nuisance as it is almost impossible to scrutinize the GG with a 8x loupe.

Not only for photogs with a bad hair day!

Replacement for the Graflex collapsible viewing hood.
This lightweight, monocular reflex hood's unique design features a right angle viewer that rotates 360° to accommodate different camera heights. Look down through it during low camera setups and then just twist it to adjust for high setups. Because it is so compact and lightweight, you can leave it on the camera during film insertion and exposure so it's always ready for your next shot. It's also perfect for copystand applications. Mounts quickly to your ground glass back, locking securely in place with a single sliding lever. The 2.5X magnifier enhances both composing and focusing, while an optional Fresnel lens provides the brightest possible viewing over the entire image area. The soft rubber eyepiece also eliminates extraneous light, adds comfort during use and protects glasses from scratching.

Derived from the Colt six shooter that won the West??

The Graflex Grafmatic is meant to shoot in a rapid sequence when needed.(NO, not from the hip!)
The Graflex Grafmatic sheet film holder holds six individual sheets of film.
Each sheet film is housed in its own septum for maximum film flatness. The Grafmatic holder operates automatically. The exposure counter records the exact number of exposures taken. A red indicator tells if film is ready for exposure, or covered. And an automatic numbering wheel numbers each film sheet to correspond with the number of the exposure counter ("45" model only).

NOTE :: There are two versions also i.e the Graflex and the Graphic. We need the Graphic, it can be used under the springs or clamped by the Graflok sliders as shown in photographs 2 and 3.

This is the holder you will need to shoot the Polaroid packfilm. Images are just a little smaller than 4x5 Inch.
Worth to mention you can use Fuji FP100C45 also. This film is better also in my opinion.

The 500 is the eldest but also the most sturdy one. Only drawback, one has to be careful when pulling the dark slde. Unfortunately there is no end stop.

The SinarBooster I fits in the measuring cassette of the SinarSix. If acquired a valuable tool, much easier to measure flashlight with a Minolta Meter. The SinarBooster has a measuring area of only 2.5x3 mm rectangle. And thanks to its exact location in the film plane, the cell precisely covers the same image area at maximum sharpness.
