But a precision spotmeter in the first place!:

But remember it is the eye of the beholder that is the most important tool, combined with the human brains. In this commandcenter the final area will be chosen and defined as middle-gray (Kodak test card).
The SinarSix is a professional exposure meter for spot readings in the film plane, using a patented meter cassette for 4x5 to 8x10 inch camera backs. Spot readings imply precise readings of a small image spot without interference from the surroundings. For accurate results, the brightness of other subjects areas - whether windows, sky, back lighting etc - must not affect the reading.

The SinarSix therefore has a measuring area of only 6mm diameter. And thanks to its exact location in the film plane, the cell precisely covers the same image area at maximum sharpness. Moreover, oblique rays affect the spot reading cell in exactly the same way as they act on the film.
This is essential for accurate readings near the image edge - especially with wide angle lenses - and also for brightness control.

Thanks to the brightness range indicator and the selective location of the spot reading cell the SinarSix probe and meter can also serve as a densitometer. The first SinarSix meter had also the Apex system and a Window ro read ASA°
See also the APEX system.

USAGE:
Place the negative on a good lightbox, measure the lowest level and the highest level which must show detail. The difference in stops rersult in a D-value (See table below).

Patent of the probe by C.Koch 1969 nr:3471.704.
History:

  • 1970 Sinarsix (rectangle window) Gossen Lunasix 2 light scales High/Low
  • 1974 Sinarsix (Round window) 1 light scale Gossen Lunasix.
  • 1981 Profisix
  • 1991 Sinar Booster I

Gossen Lunasix special mounted on Sinar measuring cassette.
These are offered regularly on Ebay, if you want one be sure it is the second version, which is much more sensitive and has one lightscale only.
No need to switch between two scales. Also the measuring area is much smaller.!

Same meter Gossen Lunasix special now mounted on Sinar measuring cassette 13x18.
Seen on Ebay regularly with ugly brown darkslides. How to blacken it?"

Gossen LunaSix along with its probe.
Measuring Window:

The first SinarSix had a Measuring window of 7x9mm (Rectangle area 63mm2) The second version had a Window of Dia. 6mm. (circle)
The latter is shown on the left. Thus covering an area of 28.26mm2.

The SinarBooster I fits in the measuring cassette of the SinarSix. If acquired a valuable tool, much easier to measure flashlight with a Minolta Meter. The SinarBooster has a measuring area of only 2.5x3 mm rectangle. And thanks to its exact location in the film plane, the cell precisely covers the same image area at maximum sharpness.
Measuring Window:

Seen on the left is the measuring Window of the Sinar Booster I. Clearly marked is the rectangle of 2.5x3mm. Thus covering an area of 7.5mm2
Location Measuring Window:

Aligned both, the later SinarSix probe and the Sinar Booster 1
It does not take much imagination to see that the placement of the Booster 1 is more ideal than the placement of the SinarSix probe.
Due to a smaller Silicium cell, the position could be much more to the end of the probe enabling measurememt closer to the borders and in the corners.
Control head:

Just one button to activate... Move slider from O to M.
This is the Sinar Holder plate for the Minolta series NR: 525.16.005
When attached to the meter, the meter can be mounted on the measureing cassette. It will fit measuring cassettes 4x5 and 5x7 the same way as the original SinarSix.
Provided with the same springs and closing mechanism of the SinarSix and Profisix meters by Gossen.

Sinar Light Meter Cassette 4x5" (10x12.5 cm) NR:525.16.000
Adapts Sinar cameras without metering backs to give TTL light metering facilities.

Sinar Light Meter Cassette 5x7" (13x18 cm) NR:525.17.000
Adapts Sinar cameras without metering backs to give TTL light metering facilities.

Sinar Light Meter Cassette frame 8x10" (20x25 cm)

Checklist Booster I/Minolta IV
Metering of ambient light:

  • All switches on the left side of the meter in uppermost position.
  • Switch on Flashmeter IV with switch Recall/On.
  • Set measuring mode to AMBI
  • Set function switch to ISOand set filmspeed using up/down control.
  • Set function switch to FNO and preset 5.6 with up/down control.
  • Plug probe cable of the booster into acc. receptor of the meter.
  • Position probe window of the booster onto a point to be measured.
  • Close diaphragm to working aperture and protect groundglass against stray-light.
  • Switch on Booster(Sliding switch to M and Lit-up diode.
  • Press measuring button on the Minoltameter IV
  • Read off correct exposure time and deviation on Flashmeter data panel.

Example:
Readout TIME= 1sec - Deviation=+8/10 f-stop
Correction:
Close diaphragm by 8/10 or set exposure time to 1/2 sec and open diaphragm by 3/10 f-stop

Checklist Booster I/Minolta IV
Metering of Flash:
  • All switches on the left side of the meter in uppermost position.
  • Switch on Flashmeter IV with switch Recall/On.
  • Set measuring mode to CORD
  • Set function switch to ISO and set filmspeed using up/down control.
  • Set function switch to TIME and set synchronisation time 1/30 sec with up/down control.
  • Connect synchro cable to flashmeter.
  • Switch on Booster(Sliding switch to M and Lit-up diode.
  • Press measuring button on the Minoltameter IV
  • Read off exposure correction (GV) and deviation on flashmeter data panel.(LCD)

Example:
Readout = Underexposure of 1,6 f-stops
(2-0.4 = 1.6)
Increase flash output by 1.6 or increase by 2 and close diaphragm by 4/10 = Ideal Exposure.

On the left is the Sinar Booster 1 mounted on the SinarSix Lightmeter cassette through the adapter shown above.
Item NR: 525.16.005

This meterholder can easily taken off and if neccessary replaced with the original SinarSix meter.
Meter holder plates. Shown types are meant for the Sinar with measuring back, but probably can be adapted to mount on other Cameras as well.

Comparison shot of the two systems. A few more versions were available: SinarSix I, Gossen Profiselekt TTL with booster and SinarBron CLM and FCM meters.

Horseman 4x5" TTL meter, also available in 6x9cm(Type 69).
Note that this meter measures more integral i.e the whole film plane. It helps getting rid of bellows extension and filter compensation, but is not suitable for pinpoint measurements like the Sinar meters.
SinarBron Imaging FCM meter with probe.
Technical the same as the Booster 1, but this one is for the FCM meters.
Minolta and Sekonic offer a booster also, with this booster you have to measure from the GG. Calibration of the GG is neccessary to obtain valuable readings.
